A drive thru this area reveals a wealth of beauty. You will notice pastures, cows & horses grazing in the meadows and little country churches along the way.
You won't be able to resist this charming little town with a population of 8,775 (according to the 2000 census). We are one of the least populated counties in the state.
The town square is the hub bub of the county. Quaint little shops, our own little farmers market on saturdays, annual festival with lots of crafts, music shows, street dance and Holiday Parade.
We truly have something here for everyone. We have the John C. Campbell Folk School for our crafter. There is Lake Chatuge with 133 miles of shoreline, great for boating, fishing, camping & swimming. We have Fires Creek Refuge, USFS which encompasses 1400 acres designated as a bear sanctuary, great place for fly fishermen, hikers, horse back riding & photographers. If there is an actor in the family, we also have the wonderful Peacock playhouse; they put on some great plays every two or three months. Yes, we also have golfing, two great courses, each will offer you a challenging game & the views are fabulous.
